The structure that will protect the town of Jaromer against a record flood includes the building of a weir system in the length of 3476 m, an adjustment of the stream-bed, the reconstruction of Podkostelni weir to a pouch weir, a fish crossing and a flood-protection closure. The building structure is carried out by Sdruzeni (Association) Jaromer - the flood-protection arrangement by the participants - BAK stavebni spolecnost a.s., D.I.S. spol. s r.o. Brno and Chladek a Tintera Pardubice. The building project will be completed in June 2012.
The deciding factor to find a solution for the flood-protection of Jaromer was a March flood in the year 2000, when a large amount of snow in the Krkonose foothills and in the middle altitude basin melted due to a major warm front. This occurred simultaneously with the melting of the snow in Krkonose. The result was the historically highest flood level flowing into the Labe in the section Les Kralovstvi at a level seen once every100-200 years - which is a flow bigger than during a catastrophic flood in the year 1897 based on that the reservoir was designed. In Jaromer the flood had a devastating impact - 184 buildings were flooded, JUTA and TANEX factories were affected, also flooded were the town theatre, library, swimming stadium, health centre as well as the school, and this was accompanied by a power cut and interruption of heating and hot water supply.
That is why in 2006 the town started conceptual work to find a solution for flood- protection and at the time when the ministry of agriculture opened a 2nd stage of a large program to support flood prevention, the town submitted an application to enlist the project for the plan to the administrator, which was MZe CR, in January 2007. Before that project could be started by handing over the building site in December 2009 a lot of hard work was needed to be carried out beforehand by the government enterprise Povodi Labe, and especially by the team of Jaromer town deputies, personally managed by the town mayor J.Klepsa. "It is only to their credit that we could inaugurate this building structure today by a ceremonial act -knocking on the Labe foundation stone," stated the director for Povodi Labe management, Mr Jirasek.
